Over the past 20 years one of the most prevalent subjects of discussions for newspapers, magazines, radio, TV programmes and online has been the earth and its' environment. Large amounts of money have been invested into the education and promotion of "green issues", with an onus on the individual, corporations and countries to change conceptions and ecological behaviour. Whilst much focus has been on recycling, reducing CFC's and lowering the "carbon footprint", there are also further concerns regarding travelling and the harmful effects this can bring to the environment.
So, how can Online Education Help Students, Teachers & The Environment?
Online Educational Services come in many forms. Arguably those which can benefit the environment the greatest are those services that endorse and promote the use of webcams as a "virtual classroom". Put simply, these services enable both teachers and students to learn or teach online regardless of where both parties may live.
As lessons can take place from the home or office, students no longer need to leave the home and make unnecessary journeys in order to visit their teachers. Similarly, teachers do not have to physically visit their students and are able to save time, money and the environment by avoiding needless journeys.
Whilst Online Education will not solve all of the worlds' environmental issues, it does provide a solution to teachers and students, that by teaching or learning online they can help reduce the harmful effects travelling can produce to the environment.
