Feeling Festive, Why Not Help People In Need This Christmas.

Feeling festive? Why not help people in need this Christmas...

Christmas is a really fun and exciting time of the year for most people, a time where we eat too much, drink too much and spend too much! But there are a lot of people in the UK and abroad for whom Christmas is a very lonely or stressful time, many people have lost loved ones and may not have any other family. Others might not have enough money simply to get basic food on the table let alone buy presents for their children. Many more spend Christmas in hospitals or nursing homes and often get no visitors to brighten their day.

Finding time to help others can be difficult if you’ve got a busy family or work schedule but there are many ways that we can help and I’ve included a few of them here.

Give some food to a local food bank, there are many people in the UK and abroad that are facing food shortages this Christmas, these include children and the elderly. Why not give some of your weekly shop to a food bank or give up your favourite treats for a week and donate the money you would have spent to a food bank.

Give blood. Blood donors are always needed; by giving some of your blood you could save someone’s life. When else do you get to say that? So don’t forget to attend your regular session or if you’ve never been before go on the National Blood Service website www.blood.co.uk and find out where and when your nearest sessions are and get some more information. You can book an appointment for a particular session or just drop in whenever you’re free.

Buy some charity Christmas cards. This is probably the easiest way to give money to charity this Christmas, go to your local charity shop and buy some Christmas card, this way you can tick off a job on your ‘to do’ list and give to charity at the same time!

Get a letter from Santa. Yes, you read that right; the NSPCC (a charity to stop cruelty to children) will send you or your loved one a personalised letter from Santa delivered by Rudolph mail. A great surprise for children of all ages when it arrives in the post! All you need to do is make a small donation. You can also send Christmas e-cards. www.christmas.nspcc.org.uk

Wear your Christmas jumper to work! On Friday 13th December Save the Children are asking you to wear your woolly to work, find out that old Christmas jumper and get your friends, family and work colleagues to do the same. Ask everyone to donate £1 on the day. www.savethechildren.org.uk/christmas-jumper-day

A good way to give money to charity as well as buy Christmas gifts is by adopting a wild animal, many charities do this and you would receive things like a cuddly toy, a certificate of adoption, and regular newsletters from the charity and if the animal is at a zoo you could even go and visit the animal. A good present for children and adults alike!

Lastly the old favourite is to buy a lottery ticket, National Lottery donate 33 million pounds to charity each week in the UK. This helps many different charities from big campaigns to smaller community based projects in your local area.
